âIâm glad we decided to do this,â I say as the waiter clears our plates. âI miss all the great restaurants here.â
My meeting with James got pushed to five so we decided to go to a restaurant and discuss things over dinner. It was my idea. I donât mind being in the office, but I wanted to go out tonight. Being back here, Iâm appreciating the city and all there is to do here, in a way I never have before. I canât believe I used to hide in my apartment every night and never go out. If I lived here now, Iâd be out all the time.
James chuckles. âYouâve mentioned that several times tonight. All the things you miss about the city. Have you considered moving back?â
âI canât. Ethan and I have a house now, and he loves it there. He loves the town and our neighborhood. Heâs already made several friends and they were able to get him accepted for membership at the country club. Soon Iâll officially be a golf widow.â I laugh, but it actually makes me sad. I didnât want Ethan joining the country club. I worried heâd spend his weekends there instead of with me, and sure enough, thatâs whatâs happening. Heâs already reserved tee times for both Saturday and Sunday, which means Iâll be stuck at home, caring for Rose.
âBut what about you?â James asks. âAre you happy there?â
I shrug. âIâm sure I will be after Iâve been there longer. Being there is a huge change after living in the city my whole life. Itâs taking time to adjust.â
He nods. âI get that.â
I pick up my glass of wine and finish whatâs left of it. I ordered a bottle and drank almost all of it. James just had a glass. It was an excellent wine. I splurged on a very expensive bottle. Since this was a work meeting, Iâm charging the meal to Adore. Ethan will never see the bill, not that I care if he did. Thereâs nothing wrong with me going out for dinner or letting it drag out for two hours. Why should I have to rush home to care for Rose? Ethan can do it. He needs to be helping out more instead of making me do everything.
âYou okay?â James asks.
âYes.â I smile at him. âWhy do you ask?â
âYour face. You looked angry all of a sudden. Was it something I said?â
âNo. It has nothing to do with you. Itâs the situation at home. Iâm feeling overwhelmed having to care for my mother-in-law. But thatâs none of your concern. I shouldnât even be talking about it.â
âYou can if you want.â He smiles. âIâm a good listener.â
James is a very nice man. Iâve always liked him. I hired him after only one interview, impressed with his knowledge of the ad industry and his drive and dedication to his career. He was married in his twenties, but it didnât work out. Now heâs almost forty and not seeing anyone as far as I know.
